Get some sleep, will ya?

So we know that sleep is the very basis for good health. Doing the Zyto Balance scans on dozens of people lately has taught me a couple of things: Most people don’t get enough minerals, are eating very poorly and are not sleeping well.
Getting into REM sleep is where the healing occurs – YOU NEED TO DREAM! I mean this in the figurative AND literal sense. Sleeping 8-10 hours (don’t laugh, I know that’s not always possible) is the best, and working WITH your circadian rhythm is the very best path to optimal health and mental well being. (Think depression, anxiety, sadness, mood disorders: these start with poor nutrition, lack of minerals and extremely poor sleep)
Since I became a mom, I have struggled with sleep. I have the “mom’s ear” – and am constantly “listening” (whether I want to or not) for trouble in the night. This NEVER LEAVES A MOTHER… ok? So, I’ve had to find some serious assistance in the sleep department.

I am not a doctor, and I don’t even play one on TV. (Hilarious. Heard it 1000 times.) Please check with your doctor before taking any idiot blogger’s advice. This is just what works for me.
First and foremost, I don’t eat within 4 hours of bedtime. No food. No caffeine for 8 hours prior. Black decaf or unsweetened chamomile tea are allowed. I don’t do coffee, so I will have tea. Anything that your body has to “process”, will be processed BEFORE any melatonin production will occur. Melatonin = sleep hormone.
THINK ABOUT THIS. If you’re my age (all of my highschool friends who are reading this, LISTEN UP – I’m talking to you) You’re NOT SLEEPING well. You’re eating too late, watching Netflix until you doze off and you’re not getting enough “green leafies” in your diet. No wonder you look like hell. And a shout out to ol’ William Chrisman alum: Y’all are drinking too much. LOL – there I said it.
Here are some of the non-negotiables for me, lately:
  • I use the SHHH app – and I never make it beyond about 2 minutes into the “song” before I’m OUT!
  • At least 500Mg of Potassium (Keto makes you heavily deficient, but EVERYONE is deficient! So GET YOUR MINERALS) Check with your health practitioner for the proper level for YOU.
  • Progessence Plus on the back of my neck
  • Wearing these after 5:30 PM (I can not tell you HOW much sleepier I am when it’s time for bed now that I’ve started honoring the circadian rhythm and stopped interfering with it)
Seems like a lot – does it? These “tips” are pretty cheap, folks!  And super easy to incorporate. My health is worth it. So is yours. Get some sleep, will ya?

forever & OILways,

This is just what I’m doing.

Survival for beginning a Ketogenic diet – first, check with your doctor about doing a Ketogenic diet. Chances are they
1.) Haven’t heard of it,
2.) Don’t believe in it when medication is so much more profitable, I mean easier, to give you, or
3.) Have heard of it but have zero knowledge or education about it.

STEP ONE: Decide this is what you want to do.

Once you’ve decided, also decide that you are no longer going to eat for emotional reasons. Celebrating, congratulating or commiserating with food is no longer a “thing”. We eat to fuel our bodies; not because it’s your birthday, your kid is going off to college, you just got a promotion, your just lost your job, your dog died, it’s Christmas/Easter/4th of July/Thanksgiving… these are all emotional reasons. We are not feeding our emotions with food. It’s over. Say goodbye.

Chips, crackers, cookies, rice, pasta, potatoes… say goodbye. These are not fuels that your body “requires”. Once you become fat adapted your body will be fueled by ketones and not empty carbohydrates. You won’t eliminate these things forever, but for the foreseeable future, you will. Adios empty, meaningless carbohydrates!

You are NEVER required to explain your diet to anyone, so don’t fall “victim” to it. I call BULLSHIT on this “excuse”. If you’re going to a family gathering or some kind of a party where you feel anxious about what will be offered, GET OVER IT. Get educated and gain the confidence that what you are doing is what is best for you. Don’t explain yourself. This brings emotions into the equation. Defending yourself can bring on anxiety, fear, insecurity – you are smart. You are resourceful. Get the answers to address the questions if you feel compelled to. I can tell you a simple answer of “I don’t put that in my body anymore” will shut up even the most persistent food-police. People are jealous and insecure themselves, and when they question what you’re doing, they are projecting. Don’t allow it. Move on from the topic.

The question of, “Why are you not eating mashed potatoes and gravy anymore, they’re your FAVORITE!” is easily answered with: “They make me feel awful. And I don’t want to feel awful anymore.”

What will you eat until you’re in ketosis? You will eat fewer than 65 grams of carbohydrates, for many, however – deep and quick ketosis will come when you eat fewer than 25 grams. Yes it’s hard, but you can do hard things.

You will feel like crap. Deal with it.. you’ve done things to your body which require “undoing”.

Make sure you are getting in your magnesium and sodium. Pickle juice is a good idea. Pink Himalayan salt is a great idea. Use it every morning. There are other nutrients and supplements you should consider, but that can come after some reading and learning that you will do.

Make sure you are using essential oils to support your emotions and tell your family you’re going to be a real pain in the ass to deal with until you get this worked out.

If you’re hungry, you’re doing it right, UNTIL ketosis is obtained. If you’re hungry after that, you probably didn’t have enough fat and protein at your last meal. YOU WILL NEED TO JOURNAL YOUR FEELINGS AND YOUR HUNGER LEVELS as a way to “get it out” and vent! DO IT. It works. Pray about it. Complain about it on social media.. whatever it takes to KEEP CONTROL OF IT, and don’t go off track. Just hold tight, the good stuff will happen.

The magic happens BETWEEN MEALS. If you have not embraced Time Restricted Feeding, or Intermittent Fasting you can skip this for now. I like a 16 hour overnight fast, and 4 hours between meals during the day. Agree with this or don’t; it’s how I do things backed by some seriously healing fasting blood sugar numbers which proved to me that it’s working. Also, lower appetite and letting my body HEAL instead of focusing on digesting food every 3-4 hours. I also have POWER in fasting. I KNOW that I can go without food when I need to. I no longer “freak out” when I haven’t eaten for a few hours, I call it a “fast” and then it becomes a game of how long I can push it. The longer, the better. Ketosis gets deeper, healing happens… (This is only true for those who are fat adapted/in ketosis/ketone fueled – NOT for those who still require glucose!)

I need to emphasize how important it is do “DECIDE” to do a ketogenic lifestyle. There are no “cheat days” in ketosis. Once you’re in, you’re in – once you’re out, you’re out.
Once you’re IN, the benefits are enormous: Appetite suppression, sugar cravings are eliminated, you don’t need to eat every 3 hours, your brain uses ketones for fuel which means you’re sharp AF, and once you plow through the keto flu, you will have energy for days.

Once you’re OUT, the bummer begins: Sugar cravings will return with a vengeance and you could even go in the opposite direction, quickly. Appetite will return and you’ll be hungry every 2-3 hours just like before. You’ll have brain fog. You’ll want to eat everything that isn’t nailed down. And most importantly, you’ll need to get BACK into ketosis. (Cheater’s recommendation: – KETO OS.. basically a quick drop into ketosis by putting ketones back into your blood stream. It’s a great way to get the benefits without the work, but if it’s not backed by your eating plan, it’s very temporary. Like, 3 – 4 hours. For the price, I use it when I need a jump back into ketosis.)

“You can not manage what you do not measure”
Write it down, seriously. Why aren’t you writing it down? You’ve heard it a THOUSAND TIMES, but you NEED TO JOURNAL YOUR FOOD. Why? So you can see what you’re doing to yourself! Find where your emotional blocks are, find out how you feel when you eat 2 slices of pie, 14 oreos, 3 bags of Cheetos, a bowl of brownie batter and 9 warm chocolate chip cookies. You see, you shouldn’t just journal your food, but HOW you feel when you eat it. If you’re going to do it, just own it already. “I feel like shit and I’m going to eat a bowl of brownie batter.” Just be sure that afterwards you also journal: “I still feel like shit and the brownie batter didn’t help at all.” Also, “I feel like I could take a 4 hour nap, my heart is racing and my stomach kinda hurts”.. if you manage diabetes or blood sugar levels, CHECK YOUR SUGAR after you do something stupid. That’ll teach ya! Once you see what’s actually HAPPENING in your body when you do dumb things, you can LEARN. Stop ignoring what your body is trying to tell you. IT KNOWS.

Read a book. LEARN why your body does the things it does. Here are some suggestions:

If you’ve been diagnosed diabetic (fasting blood sugar over 100 more than TWICE, or an A1C reading over 7.0) then you’ll wanna scare the crap out of yourself and read this:

This was off the top of my head. Feel free to ask questions and once I figure out how to see them and answer them, I will update the post.

I don’t know what I’m doing. Like, with a degree to prove it, anyway.
I read a lot and I just know what worked for me.
Since I get so many questions, I’m sharing that information here, on my “blog”.

I guess that means I’m a blogger. Blargh.

Make and Take Gift Set

yl gift

This is the Make and Take Gift Set I have compiled for the class I’m hosting tomorrow night. I’m super excited about how darn cute these turned out. My sets include:

  • Lip balm
  • Zit Zapper Stick
  • 2 oz Facial Scrub or Moisturizer
  • 2 oz Body Cream
  • 4 oz Sugar Scrub
  • 2 oz Linen Spray or Thieves Disinfectant Spray

Depending on what each person decides to mix into their products will determine the gifts they give. There really isn’t a cut and dry recipe for each item, you basically need a few base products like sugar, distilled water, olive (or other oil), coconut oil, Vitamin E (if desired), beeswax, shea or cocoa butter, sea salt, a little vodka and essential oils.

The basic idea goes like this:

  • Any spray type product is going to have a majority of distilled water. Witch hazel can be used for skin sprays. You will add a touch of alcohol (rubbing or vodka.. I use vodka for the kind I may spray in my mouth), you’ll also need a tiny bit of sea salt (which helps the oils incorporate better into the mixture) and of course, Young Living Essential Oils. (Because who uses anything else?)
  • Any “scrub” type product will have a majority of salt or sugar as a base, a good dose of some kind of oil (olive, almond, coconut – coconut is the most cost effective, but you can add the others as well), Vitamin E is also used in some, and of course YLEO (Young Living Essential Oils) of your choosing.
  • Any “cream” type product is going to have a base of oil (coconut is well received by your body, so that’s what I like to use), and YLEO.
  • The balms and sticks and lotion bars have equal parts beeswax, coconut oil and almond oil (you can change it up, use almond if you like or olive.. it’s a personal preference thing and I know my readers are smart enough to experiment and figure this part out!) If you want your bars/balms to be a little more “melty”, increase the oils, decrease the beeswax. You can also add shea or cocoa butter here.

I love these little tubes. I got mine on Etsy at $17 for 100. You can check eBay and Amazon also… Etsy has had some great prices lately. For the “Zit Zapper” stick, you just get some coconut oil to the melting point (above 77*) and add Purification oil and let them solidify. These will melt quickly and easily on a human’s face! Either store them in the fridge or add a tiny bit of beeswax to keep them a little more firm. I will add lemon (for puffiness) and Melrose (for general skin health) to mine. The lip balms are just beeswax, coconut oil and YLEO. Try lavender and orange, or peppermint and lemon – if you add a little cocoa butter and use peppermint YLEO, you have a chocolate mint balm, yum! Easy peasy.

balm and zapperHere’s another look at some different labels I ended up using because the others are very “Christmassy” – I wanted them to be more universal. So cute!

The labels were just made at using their online label design wizard – I don’t make this stuff difficult!

Who has time for that??

diy young living

These are some labels I created  using Avery’s wizard. Because of YL’s requirements, we aren’t allowed to sell anything that is labeled with Young Living information. These are home made gifts, so we’re in the clear. Please don’t label your items with Young Living if you are selling for profit. You may  use “100% Pure Essential oils” in the ingredients, if you list them.

These are the lotion bars I made in my last post.

DIY Lotion Bars with Young Living Oils

lotion bars

Aren’t these adorable? Wanna make some? Here’s the super simple way – don’t make it harder than it is!

  • Get any kind of mold that you like. I used silicone flowers because 1.) they were cheap, 2.) they were delivered to my door via Amazon prime in 2 days and 3.) they’re flexible. You can use anything to make a mold, just make sure it can stand the heat. (metal, silicone, etc) You can even use little muffin wrappers in a muffin tin, super cute.
  • Gather some beeswax, almond oil, coconut oil and essential oil. I don’t use anything but Young Living because you can’t prove to me there is anything else as pure and potent. Please don’t freak out about the type of beeswax you use; it can be pellets, pastilles, chunks..whatever, just get some. Same for the coconut oil and almond oil. Pick your favorite kind, after you’ve done your own research and find what you like. Organic? fine… cold pressed? Great. Refined? whatever you like. You’ll need equal parts of these three things. There are 15 spots in my molds, each about 1″ across. I will use about 2 T of everything to fill these.
  • Get a glass dish of some kind, a mason jar works great. Use one you can dedicate to this so that you don’t have to clean it out each time. (It’s a pain, trust me.)
  • Pot with water. This is going to be where you put your mason jar as a makeshift “double boiler” – this is so we don’t overheat and scald the oils.
      1. Fill the pot with water to submerge the mason jar. My water covered about half the mason jar.
      2. Add the mason jar, then add equal parts beeswax, coconut oil and almond oil. You can add Vitamin E here if you want. Don’t add essential oils yet.
      3. Let everything melt down. The almond oil is already liquid. The coconut oil will liquefy quickly, the beeswax is what you’re waiting on. It will take a bit – all in all, it will be completely clear when it’s ready. Don’t boil it, just melt it.

This is my favorite part: when the oils are clear, take out a drop and drop it on a plate or a piece of foil. Let it set up. Run your fingers over it and see if it’s the consistency you like. It should melt quickly, but not so quick that it makes a mess. The “equal parts” oils usually renders a harder, less melty product. At this point, I usually add a couple of teaspoons more of coconut and almond oil. I will test it again to see if I like the consistency. You can add several drops to your little tester area and pick it up once it’s set, try it out. If it’s nice, then go with that formula. If it’s too hard, add more almond or coconut oil.

    1. Once you find the consistency you like, pull it off the heat and give it a minute or two to cool just a bit. I check my temperature with a meat or candy thermometer and it never goes over 130* F, so I’m not crazy worried about my oils being affected. (Essential oils that get too hot lose their therapeutic qualities, and we don’t want that.)
    2. While it’s still liquid, add your essential oils. For my recipe, I used Tangerine (8 drops), Lime (8 drops) and Peppermint (4 drops). This makes a VERY MILD scented/flavored bar. If you want it stronger, add more oil. Do another tester and see if you like it. If you don’t, add more essential oil. (it’s pretty easy, guys!) When you get it how you want, pour it into the molds. If you’re using paper wrappers and a muffin tin, just fill the wrappers. Let them set up, about 15 minutes. (Or put them in the fridge!)

Pop them out, put them in a little bag and tie with raffia or a ribbon. Label with a “Made for you” label. Tons of freebie labels on Pinterest!
    Here’s some I like:

I have found Joy.

So I’ve been on this journey with Young LIving since August 2. Not a single OTC med has passed my lips since then, but I have a dirty little secret.. I have taken Rx diet pills in the past. On my “promise” to attempt to stop all of these pharmaceuticals, I did find myself wondering what I would do to get that “high” I feel the first 3-4 hours I take Phentermine.

“Oh man.. I love that feeling.. and the appetite suppression”, I thought. “Maybe I’ll just take them every other day, or half a day and not tell anyone..”

Duh. Obviously, I can’t do that and call myself “honest” about the oils I’m using – and remember who suffers when you cheat? YOU DO. I can’t lie to myself and think oils are working for me if I’m taking MEDS that will absolutely cause a reaction or effect in my body. I can’t, with good conscience, tell someone to try what I’m doing – only for them to say later, “those didn’t work for me”. I HATE hearing that – I am NOT out to ‘make a buck’, I want to HELP my friends and family who have told me about their personal and private health concerns.

It just hit me, literally 15 minutes ago. I have that “feeling”.. the euphoric, “wanna-hug-everyone” and shower them with compliments and praise.. the “let’s go for a run!” feeling.. the feeling I used to get with Phentermine. WHAT?! YES! that feeling! I’m on Facebook being NICE, I’m looking for documents and digging through my reference book to try to answer EVERY SINGLE QUESTION I see on Lemon Drop Lounge – I’m HAPPY, I’m SILLY, I’m GIDDY………..wait, I’m JOYFUL!

It’s been a couple of weeks since I have regularly diffused Joy. The other night I decided to plug in a diffuser on my desk because the “cold/flu” thing has been trying to get in around here, and I am not going to fall victim. My desk is’s a great big, stupid SCRAPBOOKING desk (it’s a perfect square and annoying as hell) – and it’s hard to move and get behind, which is why I haven’t gone through the hassle of plugging in a diffuser here. Since I finally did (apparently it takes the threat of viruses to do so) – I have been diffusing Thieves and Purification. (which I have heard for months and thought, “that’s got to be a strange smell” – but it’s WONDERFUL! It doesn’t smell anything like you think! and if you hate a smell of an oil out of the bottle, try it diffused – trust me) This morning, I had brought in my empty bottle of Joy and threw it on the desk so I could remove the label and use it later for a roll on or a sample. I opened the bottle and found a few drops were left, dropped them in the diffuser – and off I went. I had NO IDEA HOW MUCH I’VE MISSED IT! It’s been diffusing for about an hour, I ran upstairs to make some Teavana (I love “Weight to go! Pu-Erh”) and came back down to start on my tasks for the day. Within 10 minutes, that “FEELING” came.. I feel FANTASTIC, I am euphoric and energetic! I feel HAPPY!

Thank you Lord, for your happy oils!

“Joy™ is a luxuriously exotic blend with uplifting overtones that creates magnetic energy and brings joy to the heart. When worn as cologne or perfume, Joy exudes an alluring and irresistible fragrance that inspires romance and togetherness. When diffused, it can be refreshing and uplifting.”

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), lemon (Citrus limon), mandarin (Citrus reticulata), jasmine (Jasminum officinale), Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii), and rose (Rosa damascena).

While I’m at it, I want to share this article that actually made me cry. I have been saying this for years, I have been trying to persuade friends and family to understand this. I am begging you – please read it. We are becoming a drugged society.. zombies. People who can’t feel anything, kids who can’t COPE without a crutch. ANYTHING that you use to cope, is a DEPENDENCY. Please please please…. consider the discussion with your doctor about quitting these meds.

This isn’t my image, but it’s adorable:

Just scrolling through my old (and I do mean “old) blog and noticed I had made a post about the Zyto, so figured no better time to update it, like the present! It’s good to know some things never change. I loved the Zyto Compass and now I love the Zyto BALANCE even more. It’s super comprehensive.

I don’t know exactly HOW it “knows”, all I know is that it makes people incredibly GIDDY to see what Zyto “says” about their wellness.

Zyto Balance can “read” your energy, your physical presence and your meridians, organs and bones. Ever wonder what your body needs RIGHT NOW? Stop guessing and let Zyto tell you. Through Galvanic Skin Response, Zyto sends electrical “questions” through a hand cradle (you can’t feel anything, don’t worry) in turn, your body “answers” these questions with a (layman’s terms) a “yes” or “no”. Zyto’s algorithm and complex software compiles these answers and spits out a 20 page report about the areas of your body, mind and spirit that can benefit from extra support. I use Young Living’s library of products, but there are practitioners who use multiple libraries (and they charge 3 or 4 times what I charge) to determine which products your body may most appreciate at this time.

scan 1

My friend April Howton (@studio23s on IG) said it best, when I asked her how she was marketing the scan to her organization,

“It gives people hope. I’ve seen so many people who don’t even have that, until they see their report. It renews their hope, that there IS an answer to why they’re feeling so bad… I love that!”

Once you get to the emotions section, you’re going to NEED to get introspective. This is the part that is an eye-opener for many. Greed, hate, anger, frustration, loneliness, guilt, exhaustion…just a few emotions that will come up. There will be suggested products to begin or continue using as “balancers” to the emotions that show up on your report. It’s truly fascinating!

Remember that the Zyto is an FDA approved device, but it is NOT intended to diagnose, prevent, treat or cure ANY disease or illness. The Zyto will not tell you anything that is “wrong” with you – it simply tells you which products your body “prefers”. ALWAYS seek the advice of a medical practitioner before you begin taking any products recommended.

Here’s the previous content:

HOLY COW, I am wide awake at 12:40 am because I am SO excited about this silly thing, I can’t sleep. I have read reviews, watched videos, pulled up all the negative information I can find (because I like to see both sides of a product that I’m considering) and

  1. I can’t find much negativity except by those who worship MD’s, and even that is limited to less than 10 comments of the hundreds I read,
  2. I see NO ONE trying to sell their device (believe me, I checked! eBay, Amazon, Craigslist) and,
  3. ALL of the reviews and comments I see are THRILLED (and a little shocked) by the accuracy of the feedback this device provides.

Mine is on it’s way and will arrive WEDNESDAY…tonight is Zyto eve eve…
I am SUCH a geek for technology. This technology is kin to EEG, EKG and lie detector testing. Whether you believe in it or not, you have to try it – the scans are $25 bucks. Cheap!

I had one done last Sunday and it recommended two things I didn’t understand until I read the Essential Oils Desk Reference and what those things were used for. I have NO idea how the Zyto knew the deep dark secrets of my body! It was really cool. There are 76 biomarkers that the Zyto “reads”; bones, teeth, organs and meridians are included in these. Of the 76, I had 51 (yes, FIFTY ONE) out of range. When a biomarker is “out of range” it simply means there is something happening that is keeping your body from being in homeostasis.

–> Homeostasis; Definition; noun; (Science: Biology)
The ability of the body or a cell to seek and maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability within its internal environment when dealing with external changes. <–

The Zyto Compass sends electric impulses to the hand cradle that ask your body questions, and without conscious effort on your part, nor the ability to change the response, your body responds. Each oil and product from YL has been obtained by Zyto and given a digital signature, this is called a “biomarker”. The digital information sent to your hand is defined by the particular library of products you choose to use. There are 12 or more companies that you can use, obviously, I use Young Living. You can opt for Oils, Supplements, Weight Loss or all three.

From my scan, the first product that created the most harmony with my body corrected 17 of my biomarkers. From that, the next product is deduced – combined with the information from the first product. In other words, the software says, “Ok, if Becky takes product 1, what will happen then?” and then the second product is determined. It went down the page showing products that would correct a certain number of markers until ALL markers are brought back into homeostasis. I think I had 9-11 products recommended, but you usually want to go with the top 2 – this gives your clients a good idea of what oils they could purchase to be beneficial for them.

You can also make a “good guess” about what might be going on with your health based on what ailments those certain oils are good for. (Being careful not to use the words “diagnose” or “treat”!)

Remember, the Zyto isn’t a medical device and is not designed to diagnose, treat or cure illness, ailments or conditions – it’s just been surprisingly accurate in the many pages of reviews and videos I’ve been digging up for the last 2 weeks. And PS, I wasn’t paid to do this review – nor provided a cradle. This is my opinion as of 10/29/2013 – I will update after I receive and use it!

I put the information below, together for anyone who may be interested in a ZYTO Compass. I read and read and thought and prayed about getting one before I finally ordered it. I have an affiliate link, so if my information has been helpful, I’d appreciate you using it to purchase yours.
Recommended charges for scans range from $25-30 and up – some are charging $50 for people outside their organization. There is a monthly fee for using the device, which is why there’s a small charge for a scan.
Hope this is helpful for you all! Happy oiling!

GSR or Galvanic Skin Response and ZYTO Compass

GSR in Biofeedback: The galvanic skin response (GSR) feedback instrument (Zyto Compass) measures skin conductivity from the fingers and / or palms. The GSR is highly sensitive to emotions in some people. GSR feedback has been used in the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and related dermatological conditions, and for relaxing and desensitization training.

GSR History: An often misunderstood and difficult technique, GSR has gone through many phases of interest and rejection since the early 1900′s. The empirical study of electrical changes in human skin was described more than 100 years ago by Vigouroux and by Fere. Learning how to measure the galvanic skin response is of interest to scientists today because this test could offer insight into the true psychological and physiological state of a test subject beyond his verbal response to questioning. Galvanic skin response has continued to be used in the 21st Century in polygraph (lie detector) tests and some psychotherapy treatments. GSR measurements are typically taken on the fingers to determine electrical conductivity of the skin. By using these measurements, testers can determine the true emotional and mental state of the subject, which may assist in some formal investigations or mental health treatments.

It has been used in important research on anxiety and stress levels (Fenz & Epstein, ‘67); and it has been a part of lie detection (Raskin, ‘73). Controversy has centered around the technique, underlying mechanisms, and the meaning of the responses obtained from the skin. There has been a long history of electro dermal activity research, most of it dealing with spontaneous fluctuations. Most investigators accept the phenomenon without understanding exactly what it means (Hume, ‘76). Although GSR is the oldest and yet most confusing term, it is also the one in common use. Many attempts have been made to improve and update the terminology; two such systems are proposed by the Society for Psychophysiological Research (Brown, ‘67), and Venables & Martin (’67). Electro dermal response (EDR) is the umbrella under which the terms fall. The skin conductance response, also known as the electro dermal response (“galvanic skin response”), is the phenomenon that the skin momentarily becomes a better conductor of electricity when either external or internal stimuli occur that are physiologically arousing. Arousal is a broad term referring to overall ‘activation’, and is widely considered to be one of the two main dimensions of an emotional response. Measuring arousal is therefore not the same as measuring emotion, but is an important component of it. Arousal has been found to be a strong predictor of attention and memory.

Basically there are two techniques in the history of Electro dermal measurement. In one a current is passed thru the skin and the resistance to passage is measured; in the other no current is used externally and the skin itself is the source of electrical activity. There are only a couple of places where it is widely recognized as easy and reliable to measure the skin conductance response: the palms and the soles of the feet. In these places there is a high density of the eccrine sweat glands, which are known to be responsive to emotional and other psychological stimuli. In either of these areas, the conductance is measured by placing two electrodes next to the skin and passing a tiny electric charge between the two points. (This is what happens when using the ZYTO hand cradle) When the subject increases in arousal, his/her skin immediately becomes a slightly better conductor of electricity. This response can then be measured and communicated. When using the Zyto Cradle, these stimuli are sent from the cradle via messages from the computer, and then the response is measured.

GSR Physiology: Easily measured and relatively reliable, GSR has been used as an index for those who need some measurable parameter of a person’s internal “state”. As in EEG, there is not a clear understanding of what the measures reflect. Physiologically, the GSR reflects sweat gland activity and changes in

the sympathetic nervous system and measurement variables. Measured from the palm or fingertips, there are changes in the relative conductance of a small electrical current between the electrodes. The activity of the sweat glands in response to sympathetic nervous stimulation (Increased sympathetic activation) results in an increase in the level of conductance. There is a relationship between sympathetic activity and emotional arousal, although one cannot identify the specific emotion being elicited. Fear, anger, startle response, orienting response and sexual feelings are all among the emotions which may produce similar GSR responses.

GSR History, & Physiology taken from BIOFEEDBACK Methods and Procedures in clinical practice (1977) written by George D Fuller, Ph.D.

Avoid trying to manipulate the results of your galvanic skin response test by holding your breath or thinking calming thoughts. The GSR measurement is highly sensitive to immediate responses, which can be difficult to control with one’s mind.

To measure skin conductance (or galvanic skin response), a very small and painless voltage is applied across electrodes that come in contact with the hand (0.5V). By measuring the current that flows, conductance can be measured. By Ohms law, Resistance = Voltage divided by Current, therefore Conductance = Current divided by voltage, the reciprocal of resistance. The unit of resistance is the Ohm, and Conductance used to be expressed as Mho, but the preferred unit of conductance is microSiemens. It is the reciprocal of MegOhm. Zero resistance (a short circuit) is infinite conductance, 1 MegOhm is 1 microSiemens, 2 MegOhms is 0.5 microSiemens, 100kOhms is 10 microSiemens, and so on.

Is the Zyto Compass affected by activity-related sweating (like jogging)?

The skin conductance response is measured from the eccrine glands, which cover most of the body and are especially dense in the palms and soles of the feet. (These are different from the apocrine sweat glands found primarily in the armpits and genital areas.) The primary function of eccrine glands is thermoregulation — evaporative cooling of the body — which tends to increase in aerobic activity, so yes, activity can affect conductance. However, the eccrine glands located on the palms and soles have been found to be highly sensitive to emotional and other significant stimuli, with a measurable response that precedes the appearance of sweat.

Isn’t it simply related to hand temperature?

No. However, when the body is significantly overheated and there is a lot of perspiration, the overall level of skin conductance will indeed climb. However, skin conductance is not simply temperature-based. You can also have high conductance when your hands are cold (as when you are nervous) and you can have low conductance when your hands are warm (as when very relaxed). The Zyto Compass is not merely a temperature sensor like the so-called “mood ring.”

Most importantly, remember that your ZYTO Compass is merely a tool in obtaining optimal health; the information produced by the device is only intended to give insight as to what your body prefers at that moment. The ZYTO Compass is NOT INTENDED TO DIAGNOSE, TREAT or CURE any medical conditions, syndromes or ailments and should not replace a visit to your health care provider. Zyto scans are not recommended to be repeated in the same day, as results can be like that of blood pressure checks; subsequent results would not be as accurate because of having just completed a scan recently. It’s best to wait 2-4 weeks and even longer when looking for changes after starting a new regimen.

What allergies?

What allergies?

There’s not much to say about this combo besides “it works!” – wow, I am typically a fall allergy sufferer and I’ve been taking the capsule shown here since the middle of August (2013). I see people around me sneezing, clearing their throat, wheezing – not me! I do have the occasional “post nasal drip” (I never knew that’s what it was called!) but that’s when I’ve forgotten to take my capsule. The nice thing about oils is they are SO QUICK, you can apply topically and get relief within minutes; case in point –

Last weekend my husband and I went to see our boys perform in a band competition a couple of hours away. It was a beautiful day, a little crisp in the morning, but the sun came out and it hit 63* (my perfect temperature with sun!). We were outside all day and it was a little humid, these are the days that are particularly hard on ME because I get congested. He suffers from allergy symptoms almost year around, and that day was no different. We headed home and got in the car – no a/c because it wasn’t hot enough, and with that humidity, he began to “stuff up”. As we drove, I reached over and doused him with lavender directly on his sinuses and down the bridge of his nose, then a good application of lemon on his glands behind his ear. Mind you, I could only reach his right side. In *less than a minute* he said, ‘wow….that’s like magic’! Ha! I asked if both sides were clear and he said ‘no, only the right side’ – PROOF! I handed him the bottle and let him apply to the other side. We drove another 15 minutes or so and he stuffed up again, so we did the whole protocol again. He was clear the REST OF THE NIGHT. Sometimes you have to treat a few times an hour until you get “over the hump” – and that’s what we did. Since, I have made him a roller of lavender, lemon and peppermint that he uses every night before bed, along with Valor, so he sleeps more quietly 🙂
